To accompany our Going Viral module this guide has been created to help parents and guardians support young people at home, where they are most likely to engage with harmful online challenges or hoaxes. For adults who didn’t grow up in a digital world, it can be challenging to support and guide their children to be safe on ever evolving social media platforms. This guide aims to give a clear understanding of what harmful online challenges and hoaxes are and how best to support young people in a non-judgemental way that ensures that they feel comfortable to speak up about their online concerns.
